Us Baby Bear Bones have just released their debut EP entitled «What Starts with A U End With An I». I like their long ambiguous titles.
I first encountered the band live in Brighton, at the legendary Prince Albert pub. The band is fronted by two girls, who were wearing matching outfits and a lot of glitter that night. Obivously this immediately attracted me to the band, but their music definitely supported and expanded their image. This EP only confirms this striking initial impression.
Us Baby Bear Bones have created a sound which is at once mysteriously aggressive and elegiac. The vocal delivery is deep and clear, fringed with well placed ornamentation. Mountains is a strong first track, lulling the listener in with a little husky melody before kicking in with the same idea in colour, so to speak. The vocals are strong and harmonised, then followed by a deeper melody which is delivered almost like a CocoRosie rap remixed. The second track Sun continues to offer a strong combination of experimental vocals, beats, and glockenspiel, all features which are consistent and yet developing throughout the EP. The final track Swamp is an epic song, starting with a constant drone which reminds me of a serene rural sunrise, before kicking into some fun. This element of playfulness is always there, intoxicating in combination with the intense delivery of the words. Us Baby Bear Bones sparkle with a mysterious energy, making us follow the melodic paths they carve.
