I had the pleasure of interviewing the super talented fashion designer Matthias Maus based in Berlin.
This interview is to let you all know a little bit more about the designer and his background and what he is designing, which makes him and his designs so different.
Matthias, born in October 29, 1967 and raised in Darmstadt close to Frankfurt, is a German fashion designer. At the age of 16 attending a theatre group he said he knew he wanted to become a costume designer and since then has not looked back.
After graduating as a dress maker in Ado strube Haute couture in Frankfurt he then went on working for Ela Singh as a chief designer.
In 2012 Matthias arrived to Berlin, not knowing a lot of people he headed out in the city socialising and attending two to three events a week, after a while he became more and more known in the city and begun to build up his own career.
How old are you?
Matthias giggles and covers his face and tells me to look on Wikipedia. So I did and he is 48, but i must say he looks in his 30’s and i told him so. I think he liked me a little more after that.
Do you work in a team or solo?
I work alone and design all the clothes myself.
In a different life would you change anything?
Well everything has worked out for me now and i trust everything that I’ve done is right. So i would have to follow my heart and say nothing i would still want to be a fashion designer.
What or Who is your inspiration?
Everyone can be, along as I’m dealing and working with young people i can feel what they like. Lana Del Ray is one of those.
What sort of clothing do you design?
Well there are 3 different product groups. So we have Red carpet dresses, club wear, and the over 18’s which expose the body more than the others.
What do you like to specify in with your designs?
I like glamour, hair styles, modern and the 60’s. I’d also like to reach out to the Lady Gaga fans, the gay community that like glitter and glam that’s what i want to achieve with my designs. Two out of three of my collections are women’s, so with my men’s collection I like to expose the men in the clothing. They are almost like pin up boys but very glamorous.
What message do you like to give to the public about your designs?
I like to make everyone feel that they are the same in a way. That anyone can wear whatever they want and feel great in it and you can do whatever you like.
How would you describe yourself?
A misunderstood genius! He then laughs out loud.
When the interview finished we began talking more and he said to me..
In order to climb the ladder you have to do things you don’t like to do
That is exactly what Matthias is doing, he is climbing that ladder within the fashion industry and his designs are head turning. Previously he has attended Berlin Fashion Week a number of times show casing his collection, mixed with music and himself singing with dancers.
Lately Matthias has also been featured in AUSTRIA’S NEXT TOP MODEL working with individuals in fashion shows, which is great for himself and his designs to be seen by the viewers.
You can see how passionate he is about his work and that he loves what he does. He likes to design clothes fit for everyone and not leave anyone out, which i love.
I for one cannot wait for next year at fashion week to see what he has in store for us all.
