The Costume Institute’s Fall 2016 exhibition, Masterworks: Unpacking Fashion is on view in the Anna Wintour Costume Centre. OMG! Here at Flur we are all super excited about this exhibition, as it’s so different than any other at the moment.
It’s been a whopping 10 years since the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Institute dedicated an exhibition exclusively to new acquisitions. So this being open to the public and showcase the best and most recent fashion additions to the collection is just amazing!
The exhibit showcases different designs and styles across three centuries, beginning with the 18th century. Taking a closer look at designers in that era who focused on fine textiles and surface embellishments.

One of the earliest highlights includes a French robe volante from the 1730’s composed of Spitalsfield silk and brocaded with three types of silver thread. Apparently it’s said that it reflects light differently and under candle light it produces a glittering effect, so this piece is A MUST SEE!! Masterworks is a modest yet fulfilling display, featuring designs from the fabulous, Alexander Mcqueen, Sarah Burton, Balenciaga, Thom Browne and Yohji Yamamoto.
We seek examples of the highest aesthetic and technical quality. Pieces that are superb expressions of their respective eras and we believe are exhibition worthy.
It’s so great to see a full history of fashion all together in one room, how different the designs are and how the styles have changed throughout the years. Being a HUGE vintage fan myself these are all timeless, unique pieces and could easily be worn in this era. The designs burst out CLASS, something that you’d of probably seen on Marilyn Monroe.
Organised by Jessica Regan, she tells us that ‘There are 60 pieces in total and are all displayed on platforms inspired by wooden packing crates’. She’s also says ‘ We seek examples of the highest aesthetic and technical quality. Pieces that are superb expressions of their respective eras and we believe are exhibition worthy’.
I think this exhibit gives the public a perfect view of the history of fashion and gives people a mind set of different ways to dress. So I know what I’ll be visiting over this Christmas period now, what about you?
The exhibition is on view in the Anna Wintour Costume Centre from November 18th up until February 5th at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. So what are you waiting for, GO GO GO..
