Chiharu Shiota was born in Osaka, Japan in 1972 and has been living and working in Berlin since 1996. The artist has created exhibitions all over Germany, Spain, the UK and even the US. Chiharu’s latest exhibition is ‘Uncertain Journey’ and is at the BLAIN|SOUTHERN gallery based in Berlin, Germany.
Chiharu Shiota is very well known around the world for her immersive installations, such as ‘The Key In The Hand’ pictured below, which she held in Japan.
The artist likes to explore with space effects, different materials and futuristic objects which makes her exhibitions the most interesting. The new exhibit ‘Uncertain Journey’ has filled gallery from floor to roof of red yarn, which seems to be growing from above, almost like a red forest that you would see in your dreams.

The exhibition had skeletal hulls of boats which lay scattered on the floor gallery, with the red yarn tangled through the structure, it leaves your mind to work over time.
The artist wants you to make your own stories and impressions from her creations to make it more personal and easy for the viewer to remember. She emphasises the word ‘Remember’ because after the exhibition is taken down, the yarn is cut and cease to exist and she has to make a new exhibition , so some of her creations only stay as a picture and as a memory.
They were also different objects scattered around the gallery with more of the red yarn tangled through them. The artist says, ‘From beginning as a painter I liked making just one line, but its very difficult to tell everything with just one line’. Having said that, she now uses yarn and string, and if the line in the string has tension, the human relationship will also have tension and if the line is cut the relationship is cut.
The artist likes to use the colour red as it feels like a connection to human relationships and like one big connection like a memory system in your brain.
The exhibition also has a brilliant birds eye view from the balcony side of the gallery which is a must see. If you are in Berlin then be sure to check this out you’ll be happy you did. The exhibition goes on until the 12th November 2016.
